Somatic Experiencing

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Have you ever felt your body hold onto stress—even when your mind wants to let it go? Maybe tight shoulders, a racing heart, stomach knots, or like TV static washes over your mind? Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a form of therapy that works with both your body and emotions. It’s about releasing trauma or distress that gets stored in your body, not just in your thoughts and emotions.

Everyone has experiences that leave emotional or physical imprints. Sometimes we learn to push those aside, but they’re still there under the surface. SE helps you gently notice what your body is trying to tell you, so healing can happen in a way that feels grounded and real.

Somatic Experiencing (SE) Might Be for You If:

  • You feel “stuck” in stress responses — always on edge, shut down, or swinging between the two.

  • You notice your body reacting even when your mind says, “I’m fine.

  • You’ve tried talk therapy but feel like something deeper (in your body) still needs healing.

  • You experience chronic tension, pain, or exhaustion without a clear medical explanation.

  • You struggle to relax, even in safe situations.

  • You’re highly sensitive to sound, touch, or sudden changes — as if your system is always bracing.

  • You sense that your body “remembers” things you can’t easily put into words.

  • You want a gentler, more body-based way to process trauma and restore calm.

What SE Sessions Feel Like

Here’s how working together in Somatic Experiencing might look:

  • We start by checking in: what you’ve been feeling lately, where in your body sensations are showing up, what feels safe or unsafe.

  • We’ll slow things down to pay attention to small signals from your body—maybe a tingling, a numbness, warmth, or tightness. We observe, without judgment, and with curiosity.

  • Depending on what comes up, we’ll explore more—connecting sensations with emotions or memories, as you feel ready. It’s your pace.

  • We’ll also use grounding techniques and safe resources so you feel supported throughout—especially if things feel intense.

  • Between sessions, you might practice simple awareness of your body: noticing tension, tracking breathing, checking in with how you physically feel in everyday moments.

What You Can Expect

  • It may feel odd at first. Noticing your body more can bring up feelings you’ve avoided or didn’t realize were there. That’s okay—and it means there’s something to work with.

  • It’s all about safety and pacing. We move at a speed that feels right for you. You always decide how far to go.

  • Over time, many people notice tension easing, triggers that used to feel overwhelming becoming more manageable, and a stronger sense of being grounded in their body.

  • Healing isn’t always linear. Some days feel better, some days might feel harder—and that’s part of the journey. We walk it together.

If you often feel like your body is telling a story—through tension, restlessness, physical discomfort—or like your mind wants relief but the body still holds on… Somatic Experiencing might be a good fit. It’s for the people who want healing that honors both body and emotion.
