Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

What is EFT?

Have you ever felt like your emotions are running the show — instead of you being in charge? Or like certain feelings sit just under the surface, waiting to pop up at the worst times?

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) helps you understand and work with your emotions instead of fighting them. It’s a collaborative process that helps you access what your emotions are trying to tell you — and use that information to move toward healing and connection.

Why EFT Matters

When we ignore or stuff down emotions — the sadness, the anger, the shame, the worry — they don’t disappear. They show up later, often louder. EFT was built around the idea that emotions are actually wise: they carry messages, clues about what you need, what you value, and what’s wrong

Your emotions are not random or “too much”. By learning to listen to and stay with these emotions, you can feel more grounded, more real, and more in control of your life.

What You Can Expect

  • It may feel vulnerable. Opening up emotions that you’ve held back can bring discomfort, maybe sadness, maybe tears. That’s absolutely okay—and part of the healing path.

  • It’s paced by you. We move at the speed that feels safe and steady. If something feels like too much, we pause and adjust.

  • It’s messy sometimes. Feelings rarely come in neat packages. Progress often includes revisiting old pain before things start to settle in new ways. You maybe feel better and then feel worse before it feels “better” again, That’s normal.

Over time, you’ll likely start to feel less ruled by your emotions. Those same intense moments might still come, but with more space, more awareness, more choice in how you respond.

What EFT Therapy Looks Like

  • We start by exploring what’s been coming up for you — what emotions feel clear, and which ones feel tangled or hard to name.
  • Together, we map out your emotional patterns: what you tend to feel, what you avoid, and how those responses developed over time.

  • You’ll practice allowing emotions to surface in a safe, manageable way — not overwhelming, but real enough to matter.

  • As we explore further, we’ll trace where the emotion comes from, what it’s signaling, and what it’s asking of you.

  • Between sessions, you might notice moments when you push feelings away or let them stay. These are signs your awareness is deepening.

Could EFT Be Right For You?

Emotion-Focused Therapy can be helpful if you:

  • Feel overwhelmed or disconnected from your emotions
  • React quickly and then regret it later
  • Feel “numb” or cut off from what you really feel
  • Want to deepen your emotional awareness and connection — both with yourself and others

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I could just understand what’s happening inside me,” EFT might be the right fit.
